Fact Checked

Ronnie Coleman is arguably the greatest bodybuilder of all time, in his career as a professional bodybuilder Ronnie Coleman won the Mr. Olympia competition for eight consecutive years ranging from 1998-2005, in his prime Ronnie Coleman was an unstoppable force in bodybuilding.

Nobody came close to Ronnie in his prime, the next best guy at his prime was Jay Cutler who is also considered one of the top bodybuilders in the sport with four Olympia titles.

Ronnie was so big that nothing could stop him, on top of it all he is one of the strongest bodybuilders ever to compete at the highest level in bodybuilding and win multiple shows.

Ronnie Coleman had a background in powerlifting and when preparing for the Mr. Olympia competition Ronnie used to lift unbelievably heavy weights and had a different training style than his biggest rival Jay Cutler.

Jay Cutler was a volume lifter, he did a lot of sets with short rest in between sets with moderately heavy weights while Ronnie lifted heavy weights and did fewer sets.

Take The Quiz

It’s interesting to see that both guys used very different training approaches but both of them were at some point at the top in bodybuilding.

Ronnie Coleman was not scared of lifting heavy weights and even lifted insanely heavy weights only a few weeks out from Mr. Olympia, something that other bodybuilders didn’t do because of the increased injury risk of lifting heavy weights close to a show.

One of Ronnie Coleman’s most famous quotes regarding his training style is:

Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder but nobody wants to lift these heavy ass weights.

Ronnie’s clips of him deadlifting 800 lbs in the deadlift for 2 reps and squatting 800 lbs for 2 reps is remarkable especially since he wasn’t even competing in bodybuilding and was preparing for a bodybuilding competition.

Ronnie’s approach allowed him to build and retain his huge muscle size close to a show, this approach is something not many other bodybuilders replicated but for Ronnie it worked wonders.
