Fact Checked

Bodybuilding has long been fraught with controversy, and Generation Iron 2, released in 2017, provided insight into some of the issues within this sport.

One of the most intense scenes in the film features Rich Gaspari criticizing Rich Piana, two prominent figures in bodybuilding.

Gaspari responded to Rich Piana with a video uploaded onto YouTube after Piana passed away, in which he claimed victory over him.

Gaspari, a former bodybuilder who earned second place in Mr. Olympia three times in his career, expressed disappointment with Piana for encouraging the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and selling supplements which did not enhance performance, according to Gaspari.

He further contended that Piana’s message was detrimental to the younger generation who idolized him.

Piana, who passed away in 2017, responded by accusing Gaspari’s company, Gaspari Nutrition, of including steroids in their supplements without disclosing this fact to customers.

He warned against this practice as it can be misleading and lead to teens taking steroids without realizing it.

Piana also accused Gaspari Nutrition of amino spiking, a practice where companies add low-cost amino acids to protein supplements in order to artificially inflate their protein content and deceive customers.

Gaspari and Piana’s conversation illustrates the difficulties experienced by bodybuilding industry in cultivating a healthy and ethical culture.

Bodybuilders often resort to PEDs, yet this practice is illegal and could pose risks to health.

Furthermore, the supplement industry is largely unregulated, making it difficult for customers to know exactly what they’re purchasing.

This controversy raises important questions about the role of influencers in encouraging healthy and safe practices.

While many bodybuilders, such as Piana, use their platform to spread a positive message and educate, others may use their fame to sell questionable products or promote unhealthy practices.

Ultimately, the bodybuilding community must address these concerns and foster a culture of openness, honesty, and health.

This includes stricter regulation of supplements and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), as well as more education and encouragement for bodybuilders who choose to compete naturally.

Regarding the exchange between Gaspari and Piana, it should serve as a cautionary tale for the industry and serve as a reminder that no one is immune from scrutiny or criticism – regardless of their position or influence.
