Fact Checked

Avi, who identifies as male, wanted to demonstrate how powerlifting’s rules have changed by allowing women to compete in the women’s division.

Avi Silverberg, an elite powerlifter, had no reason to fear when new rules were put into effect that allowed her to compete in drug-tested women’s powerlifting competitions.

Early this year, the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) adopted a gender self-identification policy which allows anyone who identifies as female to compete in its division.

Avi Silverberg, a powerlifting coach who has collaborated with Team Canada, wanted to demonstrate his gender equality by living his life as though he were female. Although he is male and has always identified as such, Avi has lived his life as though he were still male.
