Top 5 Most Dangerous Lifts You Can Do In The Gym

Training in the gym can be a lot of fun; it is a rewarding experience and helps people get healthy and accomplish their goals.

The worst thing that can happen to someone in the gym while lifting weights is injury, which can keep you out of the gym for weeks or even months.

Specific exercises have more risk involved than others; it also comes down to how much weight you are lifting, is the form good, and other factors also come into play.

The most dangerous game beginners sometimes do in the gym is ego lift in technically challenging exercises they don’t know how to perform with correct form.

Doing that can lead to severe injuries. However, some guys rarely get injured because they use good form and don’t ego lift or push the weight too far many times.

Specific exercises are more dangerous than others; that’s just obvious that a squat is more hazardous than a tricep extension; you could die or seriously injure yourself in the squat while doing a tricep extension the risk is way lower.

This post will cover some of the most dangerous lifts you can do in the gym.

Squat

The squat is one of the most dangerous lifts for obvious reasons, especially if you don’t have a rack that can stop the bar if you accidentally drop the bar.

People have gotten seriously injured in the squat.

Bodybuilder Jean Pierre Fux dislocated his knees in a freak squat accident while doing a photo shoot. The pictures are disturbing; he had to retire from professional bodybuilding after that incident.

On top of that, the squat puts a lot of pressure on the lower back, and it’s common for lifters to get tight or slightly injured in their lower back after doing heavy squats.

Not to forget that you can get seriously hurt if you drop the bar on yourself while doing heavy squats.

It can also put a lot of stress on the knees, especially if you go below parallel, and potentially cause injury.

I am not saying you shouldn’t do squats, be careful.

Deadlift

The deadlift is safer than squats because you can’t drop the bar on yourself; if you lose it, it goes straight to the floor and not onto your body.

However, deadlifts put a lot of stress and tension on the lower back, and many guys get injured in their lower back or hamstrings when lifting heavy the deadlift.

Strongman Robert Oberst said deadlifts are not worth doing unless you are doing them to be a better deadlifter; on a podcast with Joe Rogan, he said that the “risk to reward ratio for deadlifts is a joke.”

He meant that the potential upsides and gains that come with deadlifting are not worth the risk it poses to the body.

He said that there are plenty of better exercises to do.

Bench Press

First, you could drop the bar on your chest or front of your neck and seriously injure yourself, this has happened plenty of times, and there are videos I don’t recommend watching of this happening to guys lifting heavy weights.

Then there is also the risk of tearing your pecs; this also happens quite frequently, and it’s a long-lasting injury that can keep you out of training for a long time; there is also a lot of stress on the anterior deltoid in the bench press which could induce shoulder injury.

So the risks are there for the bench press, which is one of the more dangerous exercises.

Leg Press Machine

The leg press machine can seriously injure people, and I’m sure you have seen videos of people destroying their legs.

If you have heavyweights in the leg press machine and lock out (you should never lock out your legs in the leg press), your legs may go the other way and get completely smashed.

That is probably one of the worst injuries that could happen to you in the gym; however, if you keep in mind not to lock out your legs in the leg press, it is way safer than squats because if you fail, nothing happens.

However, not everyone agrees that the leg press is as effective as squats; bodybuilding legend Tom Platz says squats are superior to the leg press.

Overhead squats

In regular gyms, not many people do overhead squats; I am guessing it’s more commonly done in Crossfit gyms and gyms of that nature.

This exercise can be severely dangerous as you hold a bar over your head while squatting; people have dropped it onto their heads or bodies resulting in devastating injuries.

Thankfully not many people do this exercise, and most of the people who do this exercise regularly have nailed down the form and are not pushing too heavy weights, which may lead to severe injuries.

  1. That’s very true. I have seen people pass out after doing such exercises. With correct form and proper guidance, they can be successfully executed without any problems.
