The 53-year-old athlete and bodybuilding superstar Mike O’Hearn is one of the most experienced lifters globally.
Mike has been training since he was a young teenager and has now trained for around 40 years.
What is interesting about Mike is that he has stayed consistent with his brutal training and diet regime throughout the years.
Mike has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge in his time as a 100% lifetime natural lifter and is one of the biggest naturals in the world.
In the past, Mike competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting and uses his “power bodybuilding” method to continue to improve and stay in great shape.
What we notice when watching training videos from Mike is that he isn’t afraid of the heavyweights and most of the time Mike impresses his viewers with incredibly heavy lifts.
Mike believes lifting heavy in the rep range of 6-8 is crucial for maintaining muscle mass and improving even when cutting down fat.
That is the reason we see Mike go hard on the weights and lift heavy weights all year round.
In a video Mike explains exactly why he wished he lifted heavier weights when he was a young bodybuilder and he also explains why you should keep lifting heavy no matter what your goals are:
Here’s what Mike had to say:
Please do not run away from the heavier weights, and what I mean by heavier weights is that I don’t mean you have to do singles or anything like that but keep some rep range at least for the first exercise of 6-8 and go heavy, heavy for that rep range. The reason why you still want to keep the body under that stress to maintain that muscle, not just burn off that muscle. Your diet is going to get your fat out of there, your cardio is going to help you. keep your muscle as you are getting ready for that show and that is one of the biggest things I wish I did more of as a teenage bodybuilder, it took me forever to realize, don’t run away from the heavier weights.
