We’re getting to that time of the year. The sun sets later in the evening, the weather is warm and people are having barbecues every weekend. While we enjoy being out in the sun as much as the next guy, BBQ season can wreak havoc on your physique. All that beer, snack foods and other treats can add up. It doesn’t help that most people don’t drink enough water and end up dehydrated ( a big no-no for bodybuilders). If you just spent months working hard to cut down to your ideal physique the last thing you want to do is lose it because you had a few too many hot dogs.
Since we don’t want to see you guys lose your gains over the next few months, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you get through this time of year. We aren’t saying you should skip all the BBQs just to keep your gains – after all, we all need to enjoy our lives. 1 – Eat Before You Go
If you show up at your next party on an empty stomach what do you think is going to happen? You are going to make a beeline for the snack table and start shoveling down cheetos and pretzels. Before you know it you’ve thrown back 500 calories before even getting a hamburger! To avoid this trap, make sure you have something to eat before going to the party. If you feel full you will be far less likely to binge on snack foods. Having a burger of course is ok as long as it fits your macros. We recommend a high protein meal as that will be the best way to fill you up without consuming too many calories.
2 – Drink Lots of Water
When you are out in the sun drinking beer it is common to become dehydrated. If you aren’t drinking enough water you can find yourself eating too much (often when we think we are hungry we are actually just thirsty). Water is also important as it helps flush out toxins from the body and speeds up protein synthesis. If you are concerned that there will not be any bottled water available at the party just bring your own – after all, you weren’t planning on showing up empty-handed were you?
3 – Watch Out for Liquid Calories
Always keep in mind that everything you drink (other than water) contains calories. Juice, pop, beer and wine all contain calories that are pretty much useless for bodybuilding purposes. While hamburgers and hot dogs at least contain some protein, liquid calories from juices and pop are usually sugar-based making them physique killers. Feel free to have a few beers but don’t make things worse by drinking a coke or Pepsi as well.
4 – Don’t Eat Too Fast
The faster you eat, the more likely you are to binge. When the hamburgers are ready make sure you aren’t the first one in line to get one. Take your time, eat slowly and have plenty of water. These are all effective methods to make sure you don’t overeat. We also suggest staying away from the snack food table altogether. The calories from chips add up quickly and they don’t fill you up at all. In fact, we recommend avoiding snack foods until you’ve finished your burger – that way you will be far less likely to binge on snack foods.
5 – Take a Fat Burner
Just because you are finished your cut (or are almost finished) doesn’t mean you won’t benefit from a fat burner. When it comes to maintaining your lean physique it really comes down to smart decision-making. Don’t show up to a party hungry particularly if there will be lots of junk food there. Also, avoid sugary calories from sodas and juices. Finally, take a fat burner so your metabolism will stay high and burn off those extra calories.
