Let’s be honest guys – cutting isn’t as fun as bulking. Trying to lose fat while maintaining muscle mass is difficult and don’t get to eat as much of the foods that we love. As a result a lot of guys end up messing up the entire process.
They lose too much muscle and end up with a skinny-fat physique. Or worse, they end up overeating and don’t lose anything at all. We’re tired of hearing your sob-stories about how hard it is to get cut so we’ve decided to throw you a bone.
Here are 9 key tips to get your diet straightened out. If you follow each and every one of these closely you will be well on your way to a top-notch physique.
Start with the Protein
You probably know that protein is more filling than carbs and fat – so why aren’t you eating it first? One of the biggest challenges of going on a cut is respecting your daily calorie intake.
We can often feel hungry which leads us to eat more than we should. So when it comes time for your next meal try having the protein first. It will fill you up so you won’t feel the need to eat as many high carb side-dishes – or worse, sugary processed foods.
Great sources of protein include beef, chicken, tuna, cottage cheese and greek yogurt.
Load up on Veggies
The great thing about vegetables is that they don’t contain a lot of calories and they are loaded with nutrients. That means you can shovel them down your mouth without worrying about going over your daily calorie target.
As a result when you are on a cut you should focus on filling yourself up with vegetables instead of starchy carbs.
You will find it takes way less calories to fill yourself up on broccoli compared with mashed potatoes.
Drink Lots of Water
Often when we feel hungry it’s actually just our bodies telling us that we are hungry. Next time you are about to eat a meal have a tall glass of water ahead of time.
As a result you will notice that you end up eating a lot less. You can also carry a waterbottle with you around the clock to make sure you are feeling satisfied all day.
Also make sure when you have a meal whether at home or at a restaurant you should be drinking water with it. Having sugary side-drinks only adds to the total calorie content of the meal not to mention it boosts your insulin levels and encourages your body to store fat.
Bring Some Snacks With You
Whether it’s to class or the office make sure you always have some snacks with you.
Often we get tempted to eat unhealthy foods because we see them in stores, vending machines and other convenient places when we just happen to be feeling hungry.
However, if you have a healthy protein bar, nuts or a shake in your bag you will be able to reach for that and avoid consuming a snack you will later regret.
Your brain doesn’t realize right away that it is full. In fact, it can take as much as 20 minutes to realize you’ve had enough to eat. As a result if you are a fast eater you will end up stuffing yourself before you even realize you’ve taken in enough calories.
Make an effort to eat slowly and enjoy your meals so that you don’t end up going overboard.
Pay Attention to What You are Doing
Following up on the eat slowly tip – set some sort of reminder to yourself to pay attention to what you are doing. It’s easy to go overboard on calories when we aren’t actually paying attention to what we are doing.
Look at your plate of food and ask yourself it it’s too much or the right amount. Will this help your diet? Or will it cause you to go over your daily calories?
When you take a minute to reflect on the impact on your goals you will be way less likely to cave in and eat cheat meals or skip workouts.
Keep a Journal
If you aren’t keeping track of everything you eat then how can you know if you are executing your diet effectively? Eyeballing these things simply isn’t accurate enough – you absolutely need to write it down!
That way you can determine whether or not your daily calorie intake is responsible for your lack of progress or if it’s something else. This might seem like a pain in the ass but it only takes a few minutes each day.
If carrying around a notebook isn’t your thing there are also a lot of apps available for your phone that will help you with this sort of thing.
Make a Plan
Don’t decide what you are going to eat based on a whim – plan out a diet! If you don’t plan out each meal you are far more likely to over-eat or consume something you shouldn’t.
To take it a step further you can even prepare all your meals for the week in advance so all you have to do is throw it in the microwave. How convenient is that?
Now you have no excuse but to eat clean.
