Coffee shops have become a huge industry around the world and for good reason – almost everyone drinks coffee. It’s a natural stimulant that people rely on to wake themselves up, or to compensate for lack of sleep. Like with any stimulant, over time you become desensitized to the effects of coffee and start to need more of it to get the same feeling. With that in mind, how much coffee should bodybuilders be drinking each day? Or should they stop drinking it entirely?
Are You Drinking Too Much Coffee?
Look at the amount of coffee you have been drinking over the past month – has it increased compared with previous months or years? One of the big things you want to watch out for with coffee is relying on it entirely, particularly late in the day. The first thing you want to ask yourself is why you need coffee to function. A lot of the time it’s because people simply aren’t giving themselves enough time to sleep every night. They sleep for 6 hours and as a result they are tired the next day. They drink coffee throughout the day to help them stay awake, then when it comes time to go to sleep, they have trouble falling asleep because they have all that caffeine in their system and the cycle repeats.
Caffeine is fine particularly early in the day or before a workout, but if you are using it to cover up a lack of sleep then you have a real problem. While coffee might give you the energy you need to get through the day it won’t replace the muscle repair and testosterone production that goes on while sleeping. So the first thing you want to do is make sure you are getting at least 8 hours per night of sleep. If you still need coffee to increase your alertness and to improve the effectiveness of your workouts, that’s fine.
Chronic Low Energy Levels

How Much Coffee Should You Drink?
Roughly 3 cups of regular-sized coffee is safe for most people. That means if you are ordering two or three large coffees per day you have a problem and need to adjust your intake. Also, if you are completely dependent on coffee (even after getting a full 8 hours of sleep) you should look for alternatives. There is no reason that a healthy, able-bodied person should require 3 or 4 coffees per day if they are getting 8 hours of sleep each night. If this sound like you, cut out coffee entirely so your body can shake its dependency. It’s kind of scary to think that your body can get addicted to coffee the same way it can get addicted to a drug!
So should bodybuilders stop drinking coffee? The answer is no. Feel free to continue to drink coffee in moderation as long as you are getting a full 8 hours of sleep each night. Coffee is a great tool for getting through long days or amping you up for a tough workout. Just remember that coffee is simply a tool and not something to rely on. If you are drinking too much (more than 3 regular sized coffees per day) then you need to kick that dependency.
