In bodybuilding, we see these vast and ripped physiques that look incredible on the stage.

However, even though the bodybuilders on stage look incredible most of the guys on stage don’t look this way all year round.

When you look at some of the best bodybuilders in history that compete in Mr. Olympia, many of those guys look entirely different in the off-season vs. when they are on stage.

Most bodybuilders start cutting down before a contest several weeks from their contest.

Before they start training for the contest, many guys look entirely different; while some guys take time off in the offseason and lose much of their muscle mass, others still train but bulk up and get heavier.

For example, Kevin Levrone was known for looking quite average in the offseason; Kevin took time off of training and started building the muscle back a few months before the show.

While other bodybuilders such as Ronnie Coleman, Lee Priest, and Jay Cutler still trained during the offseason but ate a more flexible diet allowed them to maintain and grow their muscles but gain a lot of fat and water weight in the process.

It’s fascinating to see the transformation between the on-season and the off-season.

We also have guys that stay pretty consistent all year round and don’t get super fat in the offseason.

This method seems to be working for most bodybuilders as it is a grueling schedule preparing for contests, and many of them need to give their bodies rest between competitions.

  1. The mags and websites give the impression the pro’s are lean and tight year round when in fact they aren’t. The levels of strictness they have to follow to get in shape would require sometime free from the lean diet cycle and to give their bodies a rest from the strict diet, extra cardio, “supplements” and the like. It’s also been shown to be an unhealthy thing for their hearts and inner organs doing the yo-yo diet. No one can stay that lean year round so there has to be a rest period of some kind between contests.
