Thanks to all of the new celebrity diets out there it’s pretty well known that protein is crucial for getting shredded.
Whether it’s whey protein isolate, chicken breasts, egg whites or cottage cheese – people around the world are starting to wise up to the benefits of a high protein diet.
While we are happy to see that people are starting to consume lots of protein to get shredded (rather than a bunch of salads with sugary dressing) they still haven’t got the full picture right.

You need a well rounded diet to make sure you continue to lose fat while maintaining your muscle mass.

1 – Water
Probably not what you were expecting here, but important nonetheless.
Look guys, most of us live in countries with drinkable tap water so there is no reason not to be getting plenty of water in your diet.
Studies show that your body builds muscle far more effectively when the cells in the body are well hydrated.
Additionally, your body will have a harder time lifting heavy weights at the gym.
This is why you feel light-headed when you haven’t had enough water – your body can’t get nutrients to the key areas quickly enough.
Bring a bottle with you throughout the day and keep filling it up with water.
Also, instead of drinking sugary soft drinks with your meals, have a tall glass of water – it will make reaching your daily water intake goals much easier.
2 – Pineapple
Pineapple is a great snack to have right after a workout for a couple of reasons.
First, the sugar content will help spike your insulin levels which will force nutrients into the muscles.
Second, pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelein which has been shown to help your body absorb protein more effectively.
Finally, there is that last added benefit that won’t really help you with workout out but your girlfriend will appreciate.
3 – Olive Oil
Olive oil makes for a great topping for many of your foods and is loaded with healthy monounsaturated fats.
In fact, the fat in olive oil actually helps reduce the breakdown of muscle in the body when on a calorie deficit.
This is important because when we are on a cut we are trying to lose as much fat as possible while maintaining muscle mass – otherwise we end up looking skinny fat.
Instead of a sugary topping try using olive oil from now on – just don’t forget to account for those calories in your daily tracker.
4 – Beets
While beets might not be the most aesthetic-looking food, they can definitely help YOU look better.
Beets are loaded with a nutrient called betaine which increases your strength and helps speed up joint repair.
While this won’t directly result in more muscle mass it will help you train and recover more effectively thereby paving the way for more gains.
5 – Coffee
Many bodybuilders have stopped drinking fancy pre-workout supplements and instead opt for a good old fashion cup of coffee.
Drinking coffee before a workout has been shown to increase endurance in activities like bodybuilding, not to mention it energizes you and improves your focus.
Many people don’t realize that being mentally present in the gym leads to better gains – and coffee helps make that happen!
6 – Chocolate Milk
Chocolate milk came back in style as a result of olympian swimmer Michael Phelps.
However, as it turns out it actually makes for a solid post-workout supplement.
It has the right balance of carbs and protein which will help facilitate protein synthesis.
After your next workout skip the fancy sports drink (aka sugar water) and have some chocolate milk.
7 – Oysters
In addition to being high in protein and fat, oysters are a great source of zinc which helps encourage protein synthesis and boost testosterone levels.
They also tend to be consumed more slowly which helps reduce the chances of overeating.
8 – Quinoa
One of the best foods out there, quinoa is loaded with protein and fiber, not to mention magnesium (which has a similar effect on the body as zinc).
It’s also loaded with amino acids and is very easy for your body to digest.
The only downside is that it is high in carbs, so try to have it after working out so your body can use those carbs for recovery.
