5 Most Common Gain Wrecking Problems

Gains: the goal of men all over the world. Oh and what we won’t do to achieve these mythological, legendary making, incomprehensibly awesome gains. Many men will do whatever it takes to gain size, strength, and the ever so elusive aesthetics. We will inject illegal substances, try crazy new lifting routines, go on soul shattering diet plans, count things, not count things, go broke buying supplements, go broke going paleo, whatever the hell we think will help us achieve gains, we will try.

For all of this effort though, there are some things we ignore. Things that can completely undermine all of the hard work we put in. If you find yourself suffering from some serious gain deficiency, you might be involved with one or more of these common gain wrecking problems. Let’s see how determined you really are. Here are 5 common gain wrecking problems you should avoid.

1. Women holding you back.

Let’s start with one of the most basic reasons why guys miss the gain train and don’t even realize it. For as much work as you put in the gym, it can be all for naught if you are hooked up with, or spend entirely too much time in search of, the wrong kind of woman.

We will first go with the more common wife/girlfriend problem. (If you don’t follow the man woman relationship, just know this applies to all forms of couples.) The problem being that if your significant other isn’t living the life you do, or just doesn’t fully support the gym side of your life, things are going to clash at some point.

If you want to spend your Friday night deadlifting giant hunks of iron while she much rather you stay home and binge watch Netflix, something is going to give. Either you will stay home with her and miss out on the gym, which will lead to resentment, or you go to the gym and piss her off something fierce. No matter what, you fucking lose man.

Any good relationship is give and take. Maybe you stay home and watch a Fuller House marathon to make her happy, and maybe she gives you an ol’ naughty filbert for your troubles. Then the next time you go out she stays home without bitching. (Ideally, she will be going to the gym her damn self and you both will get your gains.) If you are in a relationship, you need a partner who will support your passions, just as you should support theirs.

Here’s the problem for the single men when it comes to women screwing up their gains. It’s not as common as the relationship problems, but there are guys out there that will skip the gym when their drive to smash poon takes over their ambition to lift heavy shit. This isn’t necessarily all bad in moderation; it gets bad once you make it a habit.

2. Bad diet.

Well this is obvious, or at least it should be. I’m surprised by how many guys I talk to who train hard all of the time and tell me how they can’t seem to make much progress. When you dig a little deeper though the problem becomes easily visible: they do not have a good diet.

A lot of guys think they are eating right but when it comes down to it, they either aren’t eating enough calories, eating too many calories, or their carbs, proteins, and fats ratio is way out of whack. This should be the first thing you look into when you are lacking in the gains department. Always make sure your diet is on point. You don’t need to be incredibly anal about it, just make sure you aren’t slacking too much.

3. Not drinking enough water.

Have you been drinking enough high quality H2O? For most guys they are very aware that they need to drink a lot of water. The problem is they just choose to ignore exactly how much they are drinking. It’s easy to think you are taking in enough fluids when you are just guessing, but much like your diet, you really need to actively monitor the situation. The easiest solution is to get a big jug or bottle and make sure you are drinking one or two of them a day depending on the ounces. (I aim for at least one gallon a day.) There isn’t a lot of calculation that needs to be done. Just know your weight and drink accordingly.

4. Weak level of intensity.

When you are in the gym, are you Vegeta or are you Yamcha? Most guys will say Vegeta. Truth be told though; most guys are actually Yamcha lying dead in a crater after being killed by a pretty rainbow. I know far too many guys who think they are really busting their ass in the gym yet if you watch them, they are barely accomplishing anything. They do random sets of bullshit and take 5 minute breaks between sets. More often than not guys will show up to the gym after me and leave way before me. It’s not because I’m one of those guys that live in the gym, it’s because I do my full workout and don’t fuck off; I don’t go in the gym just to say I was in the gym. Go fucking lift and quit wasting time sitting around!

5. Cell phones.

As Arnold would say, “It’s Mickey Mouse stuff.” One of the major reasons I see guys getting in awful, no gains inducing workouts, is because they spend more time on their phones than they do lifting weights. If you find yourself having a problem with constantly checking your phone during a workout, just leave that shit in your car or locker. Really, it’s an unnecessary distraction that you can easily avoid.
